Mechanical Waves
Mechanical waves are a disturbance of energy through any medium. All mechanical waves must move through a medium, so waves such as light are not mechanical waves. All types of waves are disturbances that transmit energy.
The motion of a wave can be divided into two categories, transverse or longitudinal. Transverse waves oscillate particles perpendicular to its direction of motion, whereas longitudinal waves oscillate particles in the direction of motion. The maximums and minimums of waves are called antinodes, and points along the midline are called nodes.
